For Newton and for many of his contemporaries - not just fellow Protestants but also Roman Catholics and Jews - correctly interpreting the detailed description given of the Temple in the Old Testament Book of Ezekiel was vitally important for two reasons. Firstly, it was believed that the rebuilding of the Temple was foretold in prophecy and a sacred duty.
